Learned it on the water, not in an office.
Shane Hanson started in marine construction in high school, running boards and pulling cable on somebody else's crew. He spent the years after that with a heavy-civil marine contractor, working his way up to running crews on commercial jobs: bulkheads, piling, the kind of work where a mistake shows up in a storm three winters later.
He founded Hanson Marine Construction in 2020 to do that same work for homeowners, at the standard he was trained to. That meant buying the barge and the excavator instead of renting, so the equipment shows up when it is supposed to and the job arrives by water instead of across your yard.
Today the company builds docks, piers, bulkheads, rip rap shorelines, floating docks and boat lifts across Hampton Roads and into Currituck County. Shane is on the barge, not behind a desk. The person who quotes your job is the person who builds it.

How we work
What happens after you call.
- 01Within a few days
Call & site visit
Shane comes out, walks the shoreline with you, checks water depth and bottom conditions, and talks through how you actually use the water. No charge, no obligation.
- 02About a week
Design & written quote
You get a drawing and a written scope with materials named and a firm price — not a range. If there is a cheaper way to get you what you want, it is in the quote.
- 034–10 weeks
Permitting
We prepare and submit the VMRC and Army Corps package, notify adjacent owners, and handle local approval. In Currituck County it goes through CAMA. You sign; we chase the agencies.
- 041 day
Mobilise by water
The barge, the excavator and every pile, stone and board arrive by water. Nothing crosses your lawn, your septic field or your driveway.
- 051–2 weeks on site
Build
Piles driven to refusal, wall tied back and capped, stringers through-bolted, deck laid to drain. Same crew from the first pile to the last board.
- 06Last day
Walk-through & clean-up
Cut-offs hauled off, water cleared of debris, and a walk-through with Shane before we call it done. Anything not right gets fixed then.
